Alan Hutton has been left hailing Rangers for giving Kai Kennedy a new deal as they confirmed last week that he will now stay at Ibrox until 2023.
The former Gers defender has since told Football Insider that he believes that penning him to a new contract is a very good bit of business from the Ibrox faithful and thinks that he could fight for a place in the first team after his loan spell at Raith Rovers ends at the end of the 2020/21 term:
“I think it’s very good for the club.
“Obviously, Steven Gerrard rates him very highly and to be only 18, I mean you don’t want your youth products just disappearing right, left and centre, you want to tie them down and get them into the first-team.
“For him to have signed a long-term deal until 2023 is great – he’s out on loan, he obviously impressed when he was at Inverness and now he’s gone to Raith, so it’s good for his development and it’s good for Rangers.
“Hopefully he can come back after this season, played a lot of games, experienced the big, bad world and he can fight for his position in the first-team.”
Keeping Kennedy is good business by Rangers
Managing to tie Kennedy down to a new deal is a good bit of business by Rangers, especially if he can fight for a place in the first team under Steven Gerrard in the 2021/22 season.
He already made a first-team appearance in the last campaign, making a short cameo in the SFA Cup against Stranraer (10 appearances in all competitions following his loan spell at Inverness Caledonian Thistle earlier on in the term.
Kennedy will get that opportunity again at Raith at the tender age of just 18, and Gerrard sung his praises when asked about his new deal, saying that he has been ‘outstanding’.
Indeed, he clearly has potential given his glowing plaudits, and so keeping him at Ibrox was certainly a good move to make.
