One of the key considerations Rangers manager Steven Gerrard needs to make this summer is how deeply he makes cuts to his bloated and under-performing squad at Ibrox.
Having pursued a transfer policy of quantity over quality last year, which was arguably needed at the time, there are a number of players at Rangers right now who haven’t contributed enough in Gerrard’s team and are dead weight when it comes to the club’s trophy ambitions next term.
One of the club’s big signings last summer was Albanian international Eros Grezda, but it’s fair to say he now stands out as one of the Ibrox boss’ biggest transfer mistakes.
While he does hold potential, is there any chance of him making a first-team impact next season?

On the chalkboard
Grezda was bought as a winger, capable of playing on both sides, who could revitalise Rangers’ attack, giving them a pacey and direct threat beyond what was available in the 2017/18 season.
He arrived already injured though and almost never recovered, making just 17 appearances across the season, only 7 of which were starts.
When he did play he rarely impressed too much either, often looking laboured and like he lacked commitment to the Rangers cause.
With Gerrard turning to talents such as Ryan Kent and Glenn Middleton, Grezda couldn’t find his way into the manager’s plans whatsoever.
Does he have the desire to make it at Ibrox?
His agent claims he does, as quoted by The Scottish Sun this week, claiming that the player is happy to stay and fight for his place in the Gers squad, despite offers from elsewhere.
As much as Rangers fans have been frustrated by his progress, Grezda himself is unlikely to be delighted with how his debut season at Rangers went, hampered by fitness issues and rarely getting a run of games to show what he can do.
He still has the potential to be an important Gers player but keeping him around would be a risk on Gerrard’s part.
If the club are to truly challenge for honours in multiple competitions, they can’t have anyone in the squad coasting by.
Gerrard’s best move is to simply write Grezda off, put his signing down as a learning experience and move on.
With players such as Jordan Jones and Jake Hastie arriving there’s plenty of wide talent available and simply no room for Grezda anymore.
