When Liverpool announced their team to play Brighton on Saturday afternoon, many were left stunned.
Manager Jurgen Klopp decided to play a back three consisting of defender Dejan Lovren and midfielders Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum.
The bizarre team selection seemingly did its job as the Reds earned an emphatic 5-1 victory over Brighton at the Amex Stadium.
Can opened the scoring and Roberto Firmino netted twice to give Liverpool a 3-0 lead.
Glenn Murray managed to pull a goal back for Brighton from the penalty spot after Jordan Henderson fouled Shane Duffy in the box.
The Reds prevented a comeback from the hosts, though, as Philippe Coutinho extended his team’s lead and Lewis Dunk headed into his own net.
According to the Liverpool Echo, after the final whistle, Wijnaldum admitted that he had never before played in defence.
It seems, though, that some fans were impressed with his performance at the back, while others would prefer the Dutchman would prefer to return to his usual position in midfield.
