Reading owner Anton Zingarevich has revealed that he is looking to resolve the club’s managerial situation quickly, after sacking Brian McDermott.
The Royals have parted company with their boss, with defeat to fellow relegation strugglers Aston Villa on Saturday leaving them joint-bottom of the Premier League.
McDermott took over from now Liverpool chief Brendan Rodgers in 2009, initially on a caretaker basis, before guiding them back into the top flight by winning the Championship last year.
Despite some positive results, the Madejski Stadium side have slipped into the relegation fight, and find themselves deep in the drop zone with just nine games to play.
Zingarevich announced in an statement on the club’s official website that McDermott was sacked earlier today, and that he wants to find a successor as quickly as possible:
“Reading Football Club has announced today the departure of Manager Brian McDermott. Owner Anton Zingarevich wishes to place on record his thanks to Brian who had achieved great success with the club since taking over as Manager in December 2009.
“Brian gained promotion to the Barclays Premier League last year for only the second time in the club’s history thanks to a remarkable run at the end of last season. However, in our current situation, owner Anton Zingarevich felt that a change was necessary.
“The search for a successor will start immediately and it is hoped that a new Manager will be in place as soon as possible to lead the fight against potential relegation.”
Nigel Adkins and Roberto Di Matteo, formerly of Southampton and Chelsea respectively, are believed to the front-runners for the role.
